Title
Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for Tom Howarth, aged 39, Stintman at Arkwright, relating to an Industrial Accident
Date
1953
Description
Date of birth: 14/07/1914
Marital status: Not given
Address: 20 Blacksmith's Lane, Calow
Type of injury: Injury - back
Description of accident: Pulling a prop out, slipped and fell backwards; later in same shift hit his back on a bar.
Further information: 1953 Tribunal. Earlier address: "Longacres", Sutton Spring Woods, Calow. From 03 December 1951 Howarth was incapacitated due to pneumonia for 5 weeks. Orthopaedic assessment in March 1953 concludes: 'Owing to his attitude towards his symptoms I think it is unlikely he will allow himself to return to his pre-accident work [...] his disability is not so great as he himself thinks it is'. Later papers from 1955 show a request for re-appealing against the 5 per cent due to a medically - certificated deterioration in Howarth's condition, but this was turned down by the Chairman of the Medical Appeal Tribunal.
