Description of accident: Getting over conveyor belt, slipped and fell on back
Further information: Hopley had an accident on 18 November 1949, resulting in a back injury. A Medical Board Report dated 29 March 1950 says he was having physiotherapy at Mansfield Hospital. He is described as having 'some abdominal obesity.' A further assessment dated 27 October 1950 states 'good for age 64 years but a large abdomen.' His injury was assessed at 5 per cent from 19 November 1950 for life, and he subsequently appealed on the grounds that he cannot follow his usual employment as Ripper. On appeal this was this was increased to 7 per cent for life. Handwritten notes refer to both Shirebrook and Glapwell Colliery.
