Further information: Holmes injured his knee on 17 January 1949. It was operated on, on 18 February 1950. He was admitted to Berry Hill Hall on 6 March 1950 and spent 7 weeks there. Miner's Rehabilitation centre report: 'He is a heavy man who is rather frightened of his knee, but I see no reason why, after....4 to 6 weeks on lighter work he should not resume full work at the coal face.' A decision of 1 per cent disablement for life was appealed against (a doctor's note dated 7 October 1950 considers 20 per cent) but on appeal (19 October 1950) it was considered a 'Nil assessment' as 'there is no sign of Beat knee now.' Disablement benefit was not payable from 25 September 1950.
