Title
Medical Appeal Tribunal case file for Gilbert Charles Chivers, aged 51, Ripper at Langwith, relating to an Industrial Accident
Date
1953
Description
Date of birth: 15/07/1902
Marital status: Not given
Address: 339 Jellicoe Street, Langwith
Type of injury: Injury - back
Description of accident: Strained back when lifting a heavy piece of dirt
Further information: Appeal instigated by National Insurance after a 30 per cent final assessment in April 1953. Report obtained from GP Mary Semple included: 'On November 5th 1949 he was certified fit for light work only […] He […] was given work as an engine-driver […] advised never to attempt heavy work again. [...] Since then his condition has altered little. His work is now a "push-button" job, responsible, but easy, physically. It is much more difficult for him to walk the half-mile to reach his post.[...] He has become somewhat fat. [...] When I first knew Mr Chivers, he was an energetic, restless individual; today he is much altered. HIs movements are slow and he appears always to be in discomfort'.
