Further information: A letter dated 9 January 1952 is addressed to Mrs L. Bartram to request her attendance at an interview at the Insurance Office. Notes taken on 11 January 1952 includes Mrs Bartram's statement: 'It has been explained to me that my husband has no legal rights whilst a patient at Pastures Hospital and I am fully entitled to act on his behalf'. There is a doctor's letter marked 'Confidential' which details Bartram's medical history. 6 months after the ankle injury Bartram was admitted for surgery to haenorrhoids and 'in the course of the operation it was discovered he had a growth of the lower bowel and the operation of colostomy was performed. During his period in hospital he developed acute mental symptoms and it was found necessary to certify him [...] He has not been informed of the serious nature of his complaint or that he has a growth'.
