| Notes | A market town in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, situated at the north-western edge of the Peak District National Park in the valley of the River Etherow. Historically associated with the cotton textile industry, it serves as a gateway to the Dark Peak and the moorland landscapes of Kinder Scout and Bleaklow.
Ancient parish - The ecclesiastical parish of Glossop originally included the townships or hamlets of Whitfield, Chunal, Dinting, Hadfield and part of Padfield (which all became part of the new parish of Whitfield in 1846); Charlesworth, Chisworth and Simmondley (which became the separate parish of Charlesworth in 1849); the remainder of Padfield was added to the new parish of Hadfield in 1875. Also formerly included chapelries of Hayfield (with townships of New Mills, Chinley, Buxworth and Brownside) until mid-19th century, and Mellor (with township of Ludworth) until 1859. |
