1 - Draft articles of agreement between 1 John Olliver of Lane side, Bugsworth yeoman 2 William Gaskill and Edward Johnson both of Whaley township, Taxall, co Chester miners. That Gaskill and Johnson for £63 will drive a sough up Han Coat or Brearley Lane [details of route, dimensions, reference to shafts, coal, rates of payment]. - 1706
2 - Articles of agreement between 1 William Carrington, William Bennet and John Mottram. 2 William Vernon (signs William Vernon). For Vernon to hold shaft or coal pit called New Miln Coalepitt with sough for 5 years, for £12 paid in instalments (details given), Vernon undertaking not to sell coal at a lower price than coal is sold at 1.’s other pits and not to have more than 40 loads of coal upon the Bank at the end of the term. 7 Feb - 1711-1712
3 - Articles of agreement made between 1 John Shallcross of Shallcross esq. 2 William Carrington of Ashen Clough, William Bennett of Whitehough and John Mottram of Horridge. Recites that Shallcross on 1 May 1711 leased to Carrington, Bennett and Mottram, his interest in coal and coalmines in Bowden Middlecale for 20 years, that the lessees fear their title to coal under the freehold part of the commons and encroachments, granted in the lease as well as those under the Queen’s part of the same, may be disputed. Agree that 2 will pay one third of any legal charges in defence of 1’s defence of the title and that if 2 are deprived of the freeholders’ and tenants’ part of the premises, 1 will release them of half of their rent and he will pay any damages recovered from them. - 1712
4 - Articles of agreement made between 1 Ellis Hallom of Doveholes, Chapel en le Frith, miner, William Carrington of Ashton Clough, Glossop, yeoman. William Bennet of Whitehough, Chapel en le Frith yeoman and John Mottram of Stockport, Cheshire, servantman. 2 John Shallcross of Shallcross esq. Recites that John Hutchenson of Stainsborough [Callow] gent on 28 Sept 1709 leased limestone, greetstone [?kind of freestone, rough stone] and slate quarries within the Queen’s waste ground within jurisdiction of the Chapel en le Frith court to Ellis Hallom for 21 years and Hallom on 6 Mar 1713/4 assigned the lease to Carrington, Bennet and Mottram in respect of 3/4 of the stone etc. 1 agree that 2 may hold premises leased in Sep 1709 specified as mill and greetstone quarries in Kinder and in the Scout, setting lime kilns and getting limestone on land in Shallcross’s possession, “the Barms” and the Stonebench in Fairfield, greetstone and slate quarries in common etc formerly called the Kings waste grounds within ½ mile of the great road over Buxton Moor from Stone-bench to Elnor Lane Head. Rents given. - 1715
5 - Order to stop proceeding with coal workings and sough to drainage in Beard Moor or Beard Common 27 June 2 [? Geo 1]. Recites that the plaintiffs William Hoskins and Jeremiah Hale esq and Sir Bernard Hale were seized in fee of Beard Moor in Bowden Middlecale (part of wastes and common in manor and forest of High Peak) that defendant John Shallcross esq began a sough or Watergate in the liberty of Ollersett adjoining Beard Moor and has driven it 300 yards under part of Beard Moor and has sunk 4 pits from which coal has been taken, that defendants William Carrington gent, William Bennett and John Motteram are tenants of the coal works and are working them (giving account of damage done). Other defendants are named and the paper is endorsed Wm Bennett [see also D1673Z/Z8-9] - 1716
