1 - Correspondence: Edward Christian to Sir John Gell II (1613-1689)
1 - Christian - does not doubt that the sough will keep the works dry and the mines will be able to work - notes that they are backward in paying lot and advises that the bill be filed this term. 26 Oct - 1672
2 - Christian - has proposed that Mr Moore subscribe to the articles - Moore has proposed that he be granted a 1/48 part in the sough. 26 Oct - 1672
3 - Christian - encloses his mother's answer in which she insists that the miners pay 1/5 the first year and ¼ thereafter but Gell may alter it to 1/5 for the first and second years. 5 Nov - 1672
4 - Anna Primatt to Gell and Lowe - thanks them for the pains they have taken in the treaty with the miners re the articles for the lots to the sough - sets out what she is prepared to concede. 5 Nov - 1672
5 - Christian's mother is pressing him to go down [to Wirksworth] but pressure of business prevents it - does not fear anyone who shall threaten to arrest the ore. 28 Dec - 1672
6 - Christian - is pleased to hear that the business of the sough and mines at Wirksworth is going well - if those wanting satisfaction of their debts do not arrest the ore measured within the mine, which the mineral articles oblige them to do after their claim, the damage will be more against them - asks Gell for details of their demands - 28 Jan [1673]
7 - Christian - Lowe and the others plan to take all advantage against them at Wirksworth - has advised Sergeant Wilmot and others to defend their interests - Job Charlton has been chosen as Speaker - 4 Feb [1673]
8 - Christian - has got an injunction to quit his possessions - is sorry that Captain Lowe was so readily drawn into the engagement but hopes to be able to help him - the Commons have voted the writs sent out before the sitting of parliament to be a breach of privilege and have voided the election - they have voted a land tax of £70,000 a month for 18 months - a bill is to be presented for naturalizing Protestant foreigners - debate about toleration on Monday next - has sent the King's and Chancellor's speeches to Mr Bateman. - 8 Feb [1673]
9 - Christian - has been advised to defend his interest - Parliament has resolved that the penalties in matters ecclesiastical cannot be dispensed with but by Act of Parliament - 11 Feb [1673]
10 - Christian - his adversaries are so bent on vengeance that they will not let the law take its course but must take his ore by violence - 13 Feb [1673]
11 - Christian - Gell's letter has caused him to look upon former proceedings - 15 Feb [1673]
12 - Christian - Parliament has been busy about the declaration for liberty of conscience - no person is to have civil or military office without taking the oath of allegiance and supremacy and receiving the sacrament - all Jesuits are to be expelled - 8 Mar [1673]
13 - Christian - the courts in Westminster Hall are crowded with people taking the oaths - the King has gone to visit the fleet which is to sail to Portsmouth - has not had an answer from John Sladen. 22 Apr - 1673
14 - Christian - is resolved to follow the advice of counsel for his mother to present her bill in the Duchy court, which will necessitate making Gell and Mr Savile parties. 7 Jun - 1673
15 - Christian - Mr Bateman will satisfy Gell that there is great reason for making him and Savile parties to the bill. 14 Jun - 1673
16 - Christian - John Sladen was sent to town by Capt Lowe and others and has appeared in King's Bench - the Duke [of Monmouth?] has laid down his commissions and the Prince [of York?] will go to the fleet - all the newly raised forces are to assemble at Blackheath - Sir Thomas Osborne has been appointed Lord Treasurer. 19 Jun - 1673
17 - Christian - Maastrich has been surrendered to the French under conditions - asks Gell to give order that his mother's bill to be heard in the Duchy Court - will put in bail tomorrow in Capt Lowe's action against John Sladen. 24 Jun - 1673
18 - Christian - asks that Gell give an answer to his mother's bill - the fleet has returned and the Earl of Ossory is to be admiral. 2 Sept - 1672
19 - Christian - Lord Ossory does not go to sea but Sir Robert Holmes is to command the winter guard - the Dutch have retaken Naerden and Arnesford and the French ?Treeves - 8 Sep 1673
20 - Christian - is very sensible of the loss of John Sladen in carrying up the sough - the business cannot proceed until Gell puts in an answer to his mother's bill - the Commons have heard of his Royal Highness [James, Duke of York] being married by proxy to the Duchess of Medina - the Fairfax, a 72 gun frigate, broke her back near Gravesend, 7 merchantmen taken in James River, Virginia and burnt 5 with 5715 heads of tobacco. - 27 Sep 1673
