Quick Search

The Quick Search looks for words in the Title and Description fields. It is accessed via the box in the top-left corner.

You may wish to combine search terms in using the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT: Type the word you wish to search for into the box and click the search button.

You may wish to combine search terms in your simple searches using the Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT:

Instead of AND, use a plus sign (+), meaning the search result must include this word

Instead of NOT, use a minus ( - ), meaning the search result must exclude this word

Instead of OR, use a vertical bar ( | ), meaning the search result may include this word

A lot of people can't find the vertical bar on their keyboard! On a standard UK keyboard, you need to press shift and the key to the left of the "Z" key.

If you don't use any of the symbols, AND is assumed. For example:

Middleton Wirksworth

Searches in the Title and Description fields for the words "Middleton" and "Wirksworth"

Middleton -Youlgreave

Searches in the Title and Description fields for the word "Middleton" and excludes any entries that include "Youlgreave".

To limit your search to a single field, type the field name first followed by a colon. For example:

Title:Railway

Searches for the word 'Railway' in the Title field only, whereas:

Title:Railway Station

Searches for records which have the word Railway in the Title field ony and the word 'Station' in the Title or Description.

Use quotes around a search term to return exact matching phrases.
For example:

”Jedediah Strutt”

Searches the Title and Description for the exact phrase ”Jedediah Strutt” i.e the two words together with a space between, in the specified order. Without the quotation marks, the search would look through all the configured fields for the words ”Jedediah” and ”Strutt”, not necessarily next to each other, in the specified order or even in the same field.

Advanced Search

Unlike quick searches, advanced searches do not require you to enter command syntax or specify field names.

Follow the on-screen annotations next to and inside the search boxes. These provide guidance on performing searches for records containing all the words entered, records containing at least one of the words entered or records without the words entered.
