Biography
After education at M de St Quentin's School in Chelsea (1798-1802) she settled at the family home in Reading, where it had moved after Mary had won £20,000 with a lottery ticket given to her as a 10th birthday present. Poems of hers were first published in 1810. Although she continued to write verse and prose for magazines, in the 1820s she took up the writing of plays at the suggestion of Coleridge. She specialised in historical tragedies. She stopped writing plays in the late 1830s, but her prose work continued to be well received.
