History	In 1810 William Johnson bought a pottery business in Newbold, which was bequeathed to his wife Catherine nee Pearson on his death. She then left the business to her nephew, James Jervis. Around this time the business became known as Pearsons. As a result of financial problems during the early 1980s, the business was put into receivership in 1982. In Dec 1982 it was purchased from the receivers by T F Roberts, who re-established the pottery. The business of Pearson & Co was incorporated under the Companies Act as Pearson & Co (Chesterfield) Ltd in 1922. It later took over James Pearson Ltd (based at Oldfield Pottery, Chesterfield), which had been established by another member of the family in the mid-nineteenth century. Other subsidiary companies formed or taken over by Pearson & Co include Chesterfield Fireclays Co Ltd, Derbyshire Refractories Ltd, Abbeydale New Bone China Co Ltd of Duffield and Ault Potteries Ltd of Church Gresley. Abbeydale was founded in January 1961 by Edith Robinson, her husband, Robert Head, and her sister, Sheila Lambert. Production began in July 1962, initially with eight patterns and about 26 staff. In August 1964, Pearson & Co. (Chesterfield) Ltd. took a controlling interest in the company, with Pearsons taking a full controlling interest in January 1971.
