Followed his father as a whaler between 1803-1823. He enrolled in 1806 at Edinburgh University, spending his winters studying chemistry and natural philosophy and his summers planning and carrying out scientific researches in the Arctic. He made many of his most important discoveries in Arctic geography, meterology and oceanography between 1813 and 1817. He was ordained as a deacon in 1825 and was Curate of Bessingby in Yorkshire, 1825-1827, Chaplain of the Floating Church for Seamen in Liverpool, 1827-1832, Chaplain in charge of Bedford Chapel, Exeter, 1832-1837, and Vicar of Bradford, Yorkshire, from 1838. He wrote prolifically on many subjects, including magnetism, religion and social reform.
