The Cromford & High Peak Railway was created by Acts of Parliament in May 1825, soon after the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway. In the first of the Acts, the railway was envisaged as "a Railway or Tramroad for passage of waggons and other carriages, to be propelled thereon by Stationary or Locomotive Steam Engines or other sufficient power". The Railway opened in 1830/1831 to link the Cromford Canal and Peak Forest Canal, and its route continued to Whaley Bridge. It was primarily used for freight traffic over the 33 miles between Cromford and Whaley Bridge. It was taken over by the LNWR in the late 19th century, and the line eventually closed in 1969. |
