History
East Midlands airport opened in 1965 with the basic requirements of a 5,850ft runway, 60ft taxiway, a new hangar floor and parking for 850 cars. Soon, the increased volume of freight traffic demanded further development. In 1970, agreement was reached on creating a new freight complex and both the runway and the terminal were extended. By 1992, another major terminal extension was proposed, but the owning local authorities could not fund the development. They therefore made the decision to transfer this major regional airport to the private sector. The airport was purchased by the National Express Group for £24.3 million. Expansion continued and in 2001 the airport was purchased by the Manchester Airport Group, and later renamed 'Nottingham East Midlands.'
