Biography
Briggs was born in Kings Newton, near Melbourne, in 1819. After attending schools in Wymeswold, Leicestershire and Darley, Derbyshire, he was apprenticed to W. Bemrose & Sons, printers of Derby. Ill health forced him to leave his apprenticeship and he spent the rest of his life farming, recording natural history observations in Kings Newton, researching local history and writing.
He published extensively, notably his "History of Melbourne", and was also a nature poet. He acquired a considerable reputation as a naturalist and antiquarian, contributing articles to local and national newspapers and journals, as well as publishing books on natural and local history and poetry. Briggs was a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
