Description
By the Test Act of 25 Ch II c 2 (1673) every person holding military or civil office, within six months of appointment, had to receive the Lord's Supper according to the usage of the Church of England and to deliver to Quarter Sessions a certificate to that effect signed by the minister, churchwardens and two witnesses. When taking the oaths of office, he was also to make a declaration denying the doctrine of transubstantiation. This Act was re-enacted a number of times with amendments and was repealed in 1828.
