Administrative HistoryFollowing the nationalisation of the coal industry and the setting up of the National Coal Board, the collieries of South Derbyshire were originally placed in the East Midlands Division and within the Division in the No. 7 Area. In 1967 the reorganisation of the internal structure of the National Coal Board led to the establishment of the South Derbyshire Area.

In 1984, the areas were organised as follows: Area Director, Deputy Direcords and Senior Production Managers, and Staff Manager / Secretary, with the following Departments: Estates, Finance, Industrial Relations, Legal, Marketing, Medical Services, Mining, Public Relations, Purchasing and Stores, Road Transport Service, Scientific Control, Administration, and Statistics. There were also the Central Rescue Stations, Central Stores, Central Workshops, and the individual collieries.
