TitleCorrespondence file relating to grant of Arms for Derbyshire County Council
Date1936-1976
DescriptionCorrespondence and related papers of H W Skinner, Clerk to the County Council, relating to the county seal and the county badge displayed at its centre. Includes:
With Shaw & Sons relating to the engraving of the county seal and construction of cabinet stand and cover, 1936-1937.
With the College of Arms, beginning with a letter to A J Toppin dated 25 Jan 1937, noting that Derbyshire County Council is considering replacement of its seal, created in 1889, and asking the proper procedure for obtaining authorisation to use a county badge.
With Francis Thompson, librarian at Chatsworth, in pursuit of evidence of the origins of the county badge, since the Duke of Devonshire is the Custos Rotulorum for the county. The librarian replies that documents in the archives at Hardwick shed no light on this and that the deeds of appointment to that post show only royal emblems.
Extract from a report of the General Purposes Committee recording an offer from Capt H FitzHerbert Wright to defray the expenses of obtaining a Grant of Arms from the College of Heralds, 5 May 1937
Published copies of grants of arms to two other organisations, i.e. River Trent Catchment Board and Warwickshire County Council.
Photocopy correspondence between H Crossley, Chief Executive, and the College of Arms 1975-1976 relating to armorial bearings for the new Derbyshire County Council.
