| Administrative History | Samuel Chambers Furmston was born on 3 March 1849. He attended St. John's College, Oxford until 1883 and later married Susan Emma Newman. Samuel Chambers was ordained as Deacon at Christ Church, Lee, Kent on 21 December 1879; and as Priest in various parishes in Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire between December 1880 and October 1892; before becoming the incumbent at Blackwell St. Werbergh at the end of 1898, until his death on 3 January 1916. Samuel and Susan had four children:
Olive Furmston, born 1886, attended the Derby Diocesan Training College. She married Mr. Luke Sampson in 1918. Following his death, Olive married Dr. Raymond Glendore Bingham in July 1937.
Clement Barrington Furmston, born 21 May 1894 on Bridge Street, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, attended Chesterfield Grammar School from Summer Term 1903 to Christmas 1904. He them transferred to the St. John Foundation School, Leatherhead, Surrey until 1911. He was then articled to Merrs. Wilson & Son (solcitors), Alfreton in September 1914, before joining the 21st (University and Public Schools Brigade) Royal Fusiliers and spent six months on duty in France. In April 1916, he joined the Officers Cadet Battalion as 2nd Lieutenant in the 154th. Before the end of that year, he was commissioned in the Machine Gun Corps., before being wounded in March 1915. He was killed in action on Easter Monday (9th April) 1917 at Arras, northern France; and is buried at the military cemetery at Roclincourt, north of Arras (Plot 1, Row A, Grave 8)
Wilfred Louis Furmston, born 1898, also attended St. John Foundation School, Leatherhead between 1911-1914; and joined the 21st (University and Public Schools Brigade) Royal Fusiliers in September 1914. It is believed that he went on to serve on HMS Achilles by July 1937.
Amy Vivian, born 1900, married John Drakes. They had three children, Olive Vivien, John Clement and Shirley Elizabeth. |
