| Administrative History | Philip Gell (1787-1870) was an Anglican clergyman, serving variously as Curate of Matlock (from 1806), Perpetual Curate of Rocester (1812-1820), Assistant Rector of All Saints, Derby (in 1851) and Rural Dean of Derby: in his later years he became known as a "clergyman of the Church of England without the care of souls". He married Elizabeth Dod and they had 8 children: John Philip (1816-1898), Elizabeth (1817-1900), Charles Augustine (1818-1839), Henry (1819-1843), Frederick (1820-1902), Arthur Daniel (1822-1848), Harriet Isabella (1824-1896, later Childe) and Caroline Mary (1829-1920). His eldest son John Philip Gell, who regarded his father as somewhat strict and repressive in outlook, went on to marry Eleanor Isabella Franklin, daughter of the Arctic explorer, in 1849. |
