My dear Mrs Gell
As you say you are likely to be in Edinburgh this week perhaps we might meet – I go there on Wednesday, & leave for the South on Friday – My address will be at the Honorable B. Primrose Moray Place, Edinburgh – I do not know the number but I think it is either 22 or 23. – If you wd send me a line should you be there, I hope to effect a meeting – I have had no Australian news yet – but I fancy from a remark one of my sisters wrote that some newspapers or letters have arrived & that they will come to me soon – I have written to Mary and sent her that extract – I agree so fully with all you and Mr Gell think on the subject that I do hope she may come to England – for tho’ as far as this world is concerned Australia may offer better prospects than any other place – (especially under their circumstances) yet their well being here may be acquired at a fearful risk as regards their souls – Mary has often deplored in her letters the utter lack they had of spiritual comfort where they were – and tho’ it is true that “the wind bloweth where it listeth – & so is everyone that is born of God” yet God more frequently makes use of means, than by speaking directly to the heart and it appears to me that out there, they are quite out of the reach of means – We have just heard of the death of my Brother Tom’s wife in Tortola - another strong word from God to our hearts ! My poor Brother is left there now with his four motherless little children – She was to have been confined in Sept. – My Brother began his letter on the 9th of July – He had but just received our terrible Australian news – and was broken hearted about it. He said talking of his wife “Nanny is but poorly, but she has borne this shock better than I sh. [should] have expected considering her nervous state, and bears up for my sake to comfort me” – He posted it on the 14th concluding with these words “Yesterday the dear remains were carried by the Officers of the Government & laid by the side of her infant” – It appears that she had caught a slight cold, & this with the shock of our letters brought on a premature confinement – & her fearfully nervous natural constitution sank under it – She had also had a slight fall going up stairs some time before – but not apparently to signify – I am hoping that my Brother will accede to my request to send me the three younger children the eldest going to school – In that case if Mary came home, these two poor little families might settle down somewhere within reach of each other – & we might be a mutual comfort to each other. I have entered into these particulars, because I know you will feel for us – especially as this second trouble has in a great measure grown out of the first.
Mrs [?]Culand is a friend of my sister Emily – her greatest friend – Strange to say I have not seen her since I was a child, but feel to know her from having heard so much of her all my life –
Believe me
Yrs very sincerely
Julia Price
