Administrative History
Philip Victor Willingham Gell (1897-1970) was the son of Henry Willingham Gell and his wife Edith Georgiana Banks (nee Bradshaw). He was the great grandson of the Arctic explorer Sir John Franklin (1786-1847) and his wife Eleanor Anne (1795-1825). He was also the nephew of Philip Lyttleton Gell (1852-1926) and his wife Edith Mary (1860-1944), and after Edith's death he succeeded to the estate of Hopton Hall. He married Aileen Edith Pauline Maunsell (1895-1986) in 1920. They had two children, Philip Antony Maunsell Gell (1921-1998) and Elizabeth Edith Maunsell Gell, later Lea (possibly born 1927).
