Administrative HistoryThe FitzHerberts were established at Somersal from at least the 16th century until 1803 when the main line died out. The estate was purchased by Lord Vernon, but subsequently sold back to Sir Henry FitzHerbert who enlarged Somersal Hall in 1850.

These papers include those of Agnes, Lady FitzHerbert, wife of Sir Henry, 3rd Bart, Harriet Maria FitzHerbert, daughter of Sir Henry and Lady (Agnes) FitzHerbert, and Major Walter H FitzHerbert.

Major Walter H FitzHerbert's papers principally comprise records created during his time in Indian with the Rifle Brigade.
