| Administrative History | In 1965 The Chiltern Antiques Group was founded as a group of young women eager to be educated about the arts. In 1968, eleven similar societies came together to form the National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS). In the 1970s NADFAS became a registered charity and underwent a period of rapid expansion with the creation of many new Societies across the UK, and the launch of key initiatives such as Church Recording, Young Arts and Heritage Volunteering. Volunteers in the Dove Valley Church Recorder Group examine, research, record and photograph the churches' metalwork, sculpture, woodwork, stonework, textiles, paintings, manuscripts, memorials and windows.
Since 2017, the National Association of Decorative and Fine Arts Societies has operated under the name of The Arts Society.
In 2021 Church Recording Society was formed by the Church Recorders themselves to take over being the national society for the church recording project. Most Church Recording Groups have been a volunteering activity of one of the UK wide decorative and fine arts societies affiliated to The Arts Society (NADFAS’s operating name). |
