Archive CreatorJohn W Rimington of Shipley (1908-1996), OBE
Administrative HistoryJohn W Rimington was born in Hardy Barn, Shipley, in 1908. His father worked for Shipley collieries and his grandfather and great-grandfather had been tenant farmers on the Miller-Mundy estate. He left school at fourteen and became an office boy in the Miller-Mundy estate office, later joining Shipley Collieries Ltd of which he became Commercial and Finance Director,1941-1946, after qualifying through personal study as an accountant. Upon the nationalisation of the coal mines in 1947, John Rimington transferred to the National Coal Board for whom he continued to work until his retirement.
Custodial HistoryThese papers were donated to Derbyshire Record Office by a private individual in August 2004. Some of the documents in this archive seem to have come to light when the Shipley colliery offices were remodelled in 1937; others were probably preserved by Mr Rimington when the same offices were cleared at the time of nationalisation.
