| Administrative History | After the death unmarried of Francis Eyre, nominally 8th Earl of Newburgh, in 1852, there were disputes over the descent of the Hassop estate which had been Eyre property since the 15th century. The Cadman family of Spinkhill claimed through their descent from a supposed marriage of Lady Charlotte Radcliffe to George Goodwin in 1747. The Cave family claimed through their relationship with the Gladwin family, one of whom, Dolly Gladwin, had married the 6th Earl. Colonel Leslie of Balquhain also claimed through a marriage link and his assumption of possession of the Hassop estate led to litigation with the Caves. George Jepson of Sheffield (Yorkshire) collected genealogical and other information about the Eyres and their relatives and corresponded with various claimants. So did George's son, Xeno Jepson, a pharmacist in Sheffield. |
