DescriptionSpecial case made upon application by the Duke of Devonshire to question a conviction made against him in 1896, on the grounds that the conviction was erroneous in point of law. The case concerned a disused mine, Carther Low Mine, Hartington, and the requirement under the Metalliferous Mines Regulation Act 1872 that the opening to the mine be securely fenced off in accordance with the request of the Inspector of Mines. The Duke of Devonshire was the owner of the land with an interest in the Mine. Papers include a Summary of the case; Notice dated 26 Nov 1896, served on the two JPs involved in the case, Haughton Charles Okeover and Thomas Orme Farmer in relation to the Information supplied by Arthur Henry Stokes; Notice served to Mr Stokes, 2 Dec 1896; correspondence, Oct 1896-May 1897, to Messrs F. & H. Taylor, Solicitors to the Dukes of Devonshire.
