Administrative HistoryRecords of the Howard family of Barlow, in particular of William Howard (1790-1871). It is believed that Henry Howard, William's grandfather, settled in Barlow about 1740, coming perhaps from the Derby area. The family lived at Bridge House, Great Barlow for a long period, leaving the house about 1966, on the death of John Harry Howard

The documents fall into two groups, those relating to the affairs of the townships of Great and Little Barlow, the manor of Barlow and the parish of Great Barlow, in which the William Howard above referred to was very active and those recording William's farming activities. The two groups are not entirely exclusive, however (see e.g. 0 5/4) and one volume (E2/1) is very mixed in its contents. Ref 0 5/4 also contain material relating to the affairs of the Duke of Rutland, lord of the manor and a large landowner in the area, suggesting that William Howard was acting for the Duke.
Custodial HistoryThese records were given to the Record Office in February 1983.
