Administrative HistoryMelbourne was one of the first endowments of the Bishopric of Carlisle when it was founded in the 12th century. In the Middle Ages it provided an alternative and sometimes safer place of residence for the Bishops. From 1628 until 1701 the Coke family leased the Bishop's Palace at Melbourne from the Diocese of Carlisle. Rectory or parsonage of Melbourne; seat and Mansion House belonging; glebe lands, tenements, rents, tithes, services, copyholds etc in Newton otherwise King's Newton, Barrow on Trent and Chellaston
Custodial HistoryThese three unrelated items were transferred to Derbyshire Record Office in 1980 from a firm of solicitors in Shrewsbury via Shropshire Record Office.
