Administrative HistoryThe key document in this small collection of papers is the 1762 agreement re mining for minerals in Harpur family lands in the Staffordshire moorlands (D196/T 7). Several parties to this agreement appear elsewhere - the Norman family of Winster (D195/T 1-6), John Twigge of Holme Hall, Bakewell (D195/T 11-13), Richard Gould of Brownhill, Alstonfield (D195/E 2), the Oliver family of Alstonfield (D195/E 4), as well as Sir Henry Harpur himself (D195/T 8-9). Lead smelting in Winster (D195/T 1-6) and in Ashover (D195/T 11-12) are documented and cotton mills at Brund, Staffordshire, and Hartington are noted in a mortgage of 1792 (D195/T 9).
