Administrative HistoryThese papers relate to the Bateman family of Middleton by Youlgreave. Thomas Bateman Senior (d 1847) purchased an estate in Middleton on his retirement from business in Manchester and built Middleton Hall. His son William (1787-1835), grandson Thomas William (1852-1895) in succession inherited the estate Thomas Junior married Sarah Parker, sister of his bailiff William Parker and the couple had four daughters and one son, Thomas William. The ‘cousin Bateman’ who is the writer of these letters is probably Thomas William Bateman. William Bateman and Thomas Bateman Junior were distinguished antiquaries, early field archaeologists and collectors. Lomberdale House was built by Thomas Junior in 1844 to house his collections. For Bateman family estate accounts, see D6755.
