| Administrative History | The Hastings family of Ashby De La Zouche Leicestershire were major landowners in Derbyshire as well as Leicestershire from the time of William, Lord Hastings (beheaded June 1483). His son and heir Edward ( d.1506 ) acquired by marriage the baronies of Botreaux, Hungerford and de Moleyns, and his grandson George (d. 1544), was created Earl of Huntingdon in1529.george's grandson Henry, 3rd Earl of Huntingdon 9 1536-1595 ), known as 'the Puritan Earl' died heavily in debt (see D171 M/E 40). Eventually. financial problems led to sales of most of the family's Derbyshire properties. The Hastings were linked to the Port family of Etwall, also landowners in Melbourne, through the marriage of George 4th Earl of Huntingdon to Dorothy Port (see D171 M/T 8-10). Chellaston alabaster was famous from the Middle Ages onwards and the local 'plaister pittes' are included in D171 M/T 4.
