Archive CreatorUnion of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT): New Mills Branch
Administrative HistoryThese records relate to the New Mills Branch of the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT). UCATT came into being in 1971 when the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers (ASW) merged with the Amalgamated Union of Building Trade Workers. The origins of ASW go back to 1860, when the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and Joiners was formed. The name of the Union was changed to the Amalgamated Society of Woodworkers early in the 20th century. In 1970, the ASW merged with the National Society of Painters (NSP) originally the National Amalgamated Society of Operative House and Ship Painters and Decorators, and with the Association of Building Technicians, which however remained a separate section within the Union. These records relate to the New Mills and Whaley Bridge Branches of the ASW and to the New Mills Branch of the NSP, including some records dating to the period when they were known by the earlier names of the unions (see paragraph above). In 1970, the New Mills branches of the Woodworkers and Painters Unions merged and in the following year the Whaley Bridge Branch of ASW closed, members transferring to New Mills, by then part of UCATT. The Branch closed in 1994.
Custodial HistoryThese records were deposited in the Record Office in November 1976 and May 1995.
