Archive CreatorThompson family of Matlock, blacksmiths
Administrative HistoryGeorge Hawley, the blacksmith to whom James Thompson was apprenticed in 1848,worked for the Arkwright family of Cromford. James Thompson’s son also became a blacksmith and the Thompsons, father and son, undertook the ironwork for the Derwent Water Board when it was established. Reportedly, it was cheaper for James Thompson junior to ride to London, working his way there, to fetch the brass locks needed for the scheme than to have them sent to Derbyshire.
Custodial HistoryThese papers were deposited by a private individual in January 1963 and September 1975.
