Archive CreatorJohn Smedley Ltd, Lea Mills, and Smedley's Hydro, Matlock
Administrative HistoryJohn Smedley (1803-1874) took over his father's textile business and made it into a very successful Woollen Company. He established Smedley's Hydro in 1854 and continued to manage it until his death. Riber Castle was built as a family home in 1862.
