The caption at the bottom identifies the photograph as taken at Alfreton Colliery, showing John Marshall of Prospect Street, Alfreton, the first miner to leave work. He had started work at the pit mouth when he was 7½ years old. Copyright of print held by E. Williamson of Afreton.
