NotesAn area of present-day Malawi became a British protectorate in 1889. The area was extended in 1891 to cover the whole of the country, which became the British Central Africa Protectorate. The protectorate was renamed Nyasaland in 1907. It became independent, and was renamed Malawi in 1964.
