Notes
Berbice is an area around the Berbice River in Guyana. It was colonised by the Dutch in 1627, and ceded to the British in 1815. A uprising of enslaved peoples, led by Coffy (also Kofi, Koffi), took place in February 1763 but Dutch rule was restored across the colony the following year. Guyana achieved independence from the United Kingdom in 1966 and became a republic in 1970.
