Administrative HistoryMr Shaw’s writings consist of a massive and unfinished history of coal mining in the South Midlands area, and numerous in depth studies of individual collieries, places and topics etc which may have been intended as stand alone items or may have been intended to form part of the main history of mining.

A few of these separate studies, including the History of Newhall, he considered to be finished and lent to Derbyshire Libraries in 1990 for photocopying and addition to stock. Others remain unfinished, clearly “work in progress” and sometimes exist in several drafts.

By the early 1990s Mr Shaw had also completed a separate book “Facts relating to Swadlincote” which he offered Derbyshire Libraries for publication but we were unable to finance typing and publication at that time.

Mr Shaw also copied, by hand, large chunks out of rare older books that relate to the history of the area and these painstaking copies have been preserved along with his own writings.
Custodial HistoryDonated to Swadlincote Library shortly before or on the death of Mr Shaw in 2001 and later transferred to Derbyshire Record Office in 2021.
