Biography
Matt was enslaved at the Grange Hill plantation. He was recorded as having died of 'dirt eating' at Grange Hill in 1814. Dirt eating was and remains a common practice in African and European communities and would not have caused Matt's death, which may instead have been due to malnutrition.
