History
In 1941, the Ministry of Supply took out a lease on some land at Cow Pastures, Darley Dale, for the construction of a stamping works for Firth Derihon Stampings. The site has been described as "shadow factory", strategically placed at a distance from Firth Derihon's Sheffield operations, which were a target for the Luftwaffe. According to the information of the donor of this plan, the hostel shown in housed workers during the construction of the stamping works. The Darley Dale Hostel later became the site of Cobb Slater Instrument Company. As a result of company mergers, Firth Derihon later became part of Johnson and Firth Brown, then Firth Rixson. Firth Rixson was then bought by Alcoa Inc. The description of the Darley Dale works as a "shadow factory" comes from an article on Alcoa's website, entitled "Nostalgic memories of Sheffield: Firth Rixson, Engineering Global Prominence".
