History
Pan's Garden was established as a privately-run zoological garden with a specifically educational remit in 1955. By 1963, the zoo had over 300 animals. Captions gave the French and German names of animals for the benefit of overseas visitors, together with information about the animals' habitat and development. By 1970, the zoo had hosted visits from 351 schools and had become the headquarters of the National Zoological Society of Great Britain. It occupied a site of over 2 acres adjacent to Hill Top House, Ashover.
