A new Wesleyan church returned in 1872, the first Trust was constituted on 1 August 1873, and built a chapel on Sheffield Road. Nationally, the Primitive and Wesleyan churches merged in 1932. The former Primitive congregation on Station Road amalgamated with the former Wesleyan congregation on Sheffield Road in 1941 following the requisition of the former Primitive church by the British government.
Following the construction of the inner relief road, the Sheffield Road and St Johns Road (formerly United Methodist Free) churches united in 1982, worshipping in a new church on Scarsdale Road.
