HistoryDuring the reign of Edward II (1307-1327), the manor of Highlow belonged to the ancient family of Archer. In the 15th century it became the property and seat of a younger branch of the Eyre family. In 1406-1407 it was purchased from Hugh de Strelley by Sir Richard Vernon. It remained with the Eyre family until the early 18th century, when one of the Eyres took on the surname of Archer. After the death of John Archer, it was sold under a Chancery decree of 1802 to the Duke of Devonshire. It remained with the Dukes of Devonshire into the 20th century.
