History
According to Ash and Paling's 'Art potteries of Swadlincote Derbyshire' (2017), William Ault was born at Bagnall, Staffordshire in 1841, the son of John Bladon Ault and Mary Ann (nee Manifold), who died in childbirth and he was raised by his grandparents in Doveridge. Having partnered in business with Henry Tooth, in 1886 Ault purchased a site on Midland Road and opened his own firm. In 1922, Ault's merged with Pascoe Tunnicliff's Ashby Potters' Guild and became known as Ault and Tunnicliff Ltd until 1937 after which time it became Ault Potteries Ltd. The firm closed in the 1970s.
