| Biography | Sir John Gell was the eldest son of Sir John Gell (1593-1671), 1st baronet, and his wife Elizabeth Willoughby. He was elected as Member of Parliament for Derbyshire in 1654 in the First Protectorate Parliament, in 1656 for the Second Protectorate Parliament, and in 1659 for the Third Protectorate Parliament. He inherited the baronetcy in 1671 and became High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 1673.
He married Katherine Packer (1624-1671), the daughter of John Packer (1572-1649), a parliamentarian during the Civil War; The couple had four sons and three daughters. |
