Ethel May Smith was born in 1904. She married Arnold Hursthouse (b 1899) in 1927. Their daughter, Angela Maureen, was born 1928 in Matlock. Angela graduated from the newly established Matlock Teacher Training College in 1948, the first year to do so. She commenced her first teaching post at Church Gresley in September of that year and remained until 1954. Following her engagement to Harry Smith (married 1955), she returned to live in Matlock and taught at Bonsall Church of England school for the rest of her career, retiring in 1985.
