Biography
Lucy was born in 1771 and baptised as the daughter of Lucy and William Swift. Although there have been some suggestions that her father was actually Erasmus Darwin, who took charge of her education, there is no evidence to support this claim. Lucy married John Hardcastle (c1766-1812) in Derby in 1792, with whom she had a daughter, Mary. Lucy Hardcastle lived on Ashbourne Road, in Derby where she also ran a school for girls. An accomplished botanist, she assisted Stephen Glover with the botanical sections of his 'History of Derbyshire', published in 1829. In 1830 she published 'An Introduction to the Elements of the Linnaean System of Botany' in 1830. She died in Derby in 1834.
