Biography | Nellie Hodgkins was born at Swallownest in Yorkshire in 1900, later living at Aston and finally at Bolsover in Derbyshire. She was a stewardess for the Cunard Line, spending the majority of her career on board the Queen Mary. Her first ship was the Lancastria, which she joined in 1925. Later, she was on the maiden voyage of the Queen Mary from Southampton in 1936. During the war, she served on board the Georgic and later the Franconia. She was then involved in the post-war trials of the Queen Elizabeth. Soon afterwards, she rejoined the Queen Mary where she remained until her retirement in 1963. She died in 1969. Nellie was affectionately known as "Hodgy" to shipmates and passengers. |
