Biography
Charles Barker entered the Navy in 1826. In 1838 he was promoted to Lieutenant, serving on the 'Inconstant' in North America and the West Indies. In 1839 he began serving as Lieutenant in 'Snake', follwed by 'Monarch' in 1840 and 'Firebrand' in 1844. In 1845 he was promoted to Commander, becoming Commander in 'Serpent' in 1849, before being promoted to Captain of HMS Amazon in 1850. Between 1856 and 1859 he captained HMS Retribution in the East Indies and China until he was invalided. He died in London in 1860.
